Submission Guidelines
Story Works Reading Series is a literary journal for your ears in the form of a monthly podcast.
We take fiction of all genres, looking for more than plot. Give us character. Give us surprising reveals. Give us twists and unforeseen changes not only in the protagonist, but in us, the reader.
Creative nonfiction is not limited by topic, but must explore an aspect of the human experience. Give us revelation. Give us journey. Give us experience and insight.
In other words, we are not concerned with theme or topic or genre or style. But we are concerned with excellence in narrative.
Submissions are read blind. Names must not appear on the manuscript.
Reading fee: $5US, nonrefundable
Word Count: 2,000 – 5,000
Format: Word docx or PDF, Times New Roman, 12 pt, double spaced, 1″ margins
Simultaneous Submissions: Notify us immediately if accepted elsewhere
Response time: up to 3 months
The Story Works Reading Series accepts previously unpublished works for First Serial Rights. Your story or essay will be published on the podcast within one year of acceptance. Your story or essay may be selected for the upcoming anthology, a print edition of the best of the podcast. Upon publication of the print anthology, rights revert to the author. Until that time, the piece may not appear anywhere else in print or online. But of course, the author may share links to Story Works Reading Series material to promote self and work as much as and for as long as desired. Any future appearance of the piece online or in print must cite Story Works Reading Series for the piece’s first appearance.
The recording of the craft conversation (not the story or essay) is the property of Story Works Reading Series for use online and in print.
In order to be accepted for publication, the author must be willing and prepared to read her, his, or their piece for publication on the podcast, followed by a conversation with the publisher about the piece’s craft, inspiration, and challenges.*
*In case of a disability that prevents an author reading a work, such as deafness or severe speech impediment, accommodations will be made. Story Works Reading Series does not discriminate on any basis. Selection for publication depends solely on excellence in writing.
